The Crown & Anchor in Barugh Green, Barnsley has reopened its doors following a two-week refurbishment, welcoming guests back to enjoy great food, friendly service, and a refreshed new look.
Owned by True North Brew Co. since 2012, The Crown & Anchor is a well-loved local pub known for its home-cooked food, warm hospitality, and long-standing team, led by General Manager Matt Horn. The brief closure gave the team time to care for and improve the building, ensuring it continues to meet the high standards found across True North venues.
The refurbishment was designed and managed by Tracy-Jane Neal, a highly experienced local architect who has worked with True North for more than 15 years. Her approach carefully preserved the pub’s character and charm, while introducing a lighter, more welcoming feel that reflects the venue’s modern appeal.
Assistant Manager Emily Hutton played a key role throughout the project. Having worked at The Crown & Anchor for over a decade, Emily was closely involved at every stage — working alongside builders on site and collaborating with the True North design team on the pub’s new colour palette, menus, and promotional materials.
Adding a personal and local touch, a series of watercolour artworks now displayed in the restaurant were created by Emily’s grandmother, Patricia Abdurrahman. A mixed-media artist since 1986, Patricia has exhibited her work across the region, including in Wakefield and Holmfirth. Her pieces bring warmth and a strong sense of local connection to the refurbished space.
Attention to detail runs throughout the redesign, from the restored wooden trellis to the sanded and refinished cubicle doors, all carefully chosen to complement the new look while retaining the pub’s authentic feel.
The Crown & Anchor team are delighted to welcome both familiar faces and new visitors to experience the refreshed interiors, updated menu, and the same friendly service that has made the pub a Barugh Green favourite for many years.
